It was 'Father Knows Best' and 'Mayberry R.F.D.' for me, growing up in Frankfort. My sister and I would ride our bikes to the other end of town, and swim all afternoon at the T.P.A. pool. We spent many days playing at Dorner's Park. Sometimes, taking a lunch sack with us and a quarter to buy treats at the little concession stand that opened each afternoon. We knew if we needed help or got hurt, any neighbor close by would come to our aid. The downside, our parents always found out when we did things we were not suppose to be doing ! But, the important thing, we always felt safe and protected. After supper, we and the neighborhood kids would play Mother May I, Rover, O Rover and Statue until our parents would call us in to get ready for bed. During the county fair, early in the day, ( to get a good spot ), my Dad would park his pickup along the race track. Then, that night, we would walk to the fairgrounds, with popcorn and drinks, sit in lawn chairs in the back of the truck and spend the evening 'making bets' on the races. Since we lived close to the fairgrounds, I could watch the tents and carnival rides being put together from my bedroom window.. The glow of the lights and the music of the merry-go-round would fill my room. But, years later, I don't remember what year, exactly, the scary red glow of the grandstand burning also filled my room.
This site brings back memories of the town we grew up in. I appreciate Steve's dedication and work to preserve and revive those memories.. Thank you..
I remember the grain elevator fire off S.Jackson St.I don't remember what year.I lived at 1652 s.Jackson.I looked out my upstairs bedroom window when the fire trucks went by.I thought it was the end of the world(probably all those 50's sci-fi shows at the Roxy!)The sky was a blood red color!Thanks to the fire dept.the south end of town didn't burn down!!Also at the railroad tracks on S.Jackson on the westside used to be a filling station.It burnt down at least twice!
