Love the picture of the Campus Castle!

I know I tend to talk about food a lot, but scent and taste play a large part of in memories and we (my family) spent a lot of time eating out.   On Friday nights, it was either the Moose or the Campus Castle, if the folks won, it was the Moose, if I whined enough, it was the Campus Castle.
I always jockeyed for the seat next to the jukebox and my Dad always tried to keep me away from it, it was a running gag for us. He swore that if he heard "Mr. Tambourine Man" one more time that I would never see another dime or quarter again.
I remember going to the drive though window on my bike because I had my dog in the basket of my Sting Ray.  Didn't bother the ladies working the window one bit. I would get one burger with ketchup and one burger, no bun please! Try that today at McDonald's and you will get all kinds of hell and probably not waited on.

PJ--

One of the most stirring photos on the Frankfort Place website is the photo of the Campus Castle.  I was close friends with the owner (mainly, his son, Gail).  However, Clarence and I visited many, many  times.  He was a good man.  I spent much of my waking hours in the Campus (or in the parking lot) as people with "cool cars" did.  I had a tricked out and customized 1953 Mercury.

The photo of the Campus Castle brought back an inexhaustable number of memories.  If I had a dollar for every time I had walked thru that door, I would be an extremely wealthy man.

What fun we had!!

Okay Ron, now we are talking... My Dad and brother were really into cars, in fact, my earliest memories are of going to car shows, drag races at Bunker Hill and the 500 of course. My biggest challenge as a kid was to learn to eat a warm ham sandwich, because until I could, I couldn't go to the drags. My dad figured I never would, so he thought he was safe. HA! I loved the drags so much that I would have licked the track if he had asked me too.
My brother had a '45 Chevy truck that he raced and it was my job to get up early and wipe the numbers off before my mom saw them the next day. I still remember the night that he and Sonny Lahee crashed, there was no way for mom not to find out about that one.
Do you remember a car club in Frankfort in the late 50's, early 60's? I think sometimes they met at the Teener club at the fairgrounds and sometimes in some guy's garage.
My kids will still yell "MOM! Car!" as we are driving by a "vintage" car and I will give my guess and then go back to see what make and year it is. I'm usually right within a year or so, but their eyes glaze over when I go into the differences between what makes a 57 Chevy a classic and a 58 not so classic.
I remember Gail and Clarence well, it's so nice to talk about it.

French fries, marshmallow cokes and that was so good. I still remember the tastes.

I think the only add flavors Dad had at the Twin Gables were cherry and maybe vanilla.
